Government Documents Show Police Disabling AI Oversight Tools

Mother Jones

Once best known for developing the Taser, Axon has transformed into a 50 billion military and law enforcement tech giant.Mother Jones illustration; Michael Nigro/Pacific Press/Zuma; Arthur Ogleznev/Unsplash; Logan Weaver/Unsplash In April 2024, the American police tech firm Axon, which leads the market for police body cameras, released a tool it billed as "revolutionary": Draft One, an AI-powered software package that would turn body camera footage and audio into intelligible police reports. Once best known for developing the Taser, Axon has transformed into a 50 billion military and law enforcement tech giant, providing more than 5,000 police departments across the country with a suite of cloud-based products to manage evidence collection and storage. Draft One, the AI tool, connects with the company's body cameras and evidence storage service to write police reports with little human intervention. At least 21 departments have experimented with the software. The use of artificial intelligence in generating police reports has been particularly troubling, according to civil rights advocacy groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation and ACLU, because of generative AI's propensity towards racial and gender bias, and its tendency to insert inaccuracies into texts--including wholesale inventions known by technologists as "hallucinations." "I can almost guarantee [AI] reports have been used in plea deals," a police captain wrote.

Tesla and Honda report over 350 crashes involving advanced driving assistance systems

FOX News

Fox News Flash top headlines are here. Check out what's clicking on Foxnews.com. Tesla Inc reported 273 vehicle crashes involving advanced driving assistance systems like Autopilot since July, while Honda Motor identified 90, data from U.S. auto safety regulators released on Wednesday showed. The companies made the disclosures to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) after the regulator issued an order in June 2021 requiring automakers and tech companies to immediately report all crashes involving advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and vehicles equipped with automated driving systems being tested on public roads. Of the 392 total crashes involving ADAS reported by a dozen automakers, six deaths were reported and five had serious injuries.

Cybersecurity Tools Gaining an Edge from AI

#artificialintelligence

In 2021, more firms will employ AI to battle cyberattacks, trying to gain an edge in a game of one-upmanship with hackers and attackers. A survey of 20 cybersecurity experts recently surveyed by Forbes showed some patterns. For example, open source software can be an easy way into organizations. Gaining more visibility into open source contributions is possible with the use of AI and machine learning, according to Maty Siman, CTO of Checkmarx, a software security company based in Ramat Gan, Israel. "Rarely does a week go by without the discovery of malicious open source packages," Siman stated.

Tesla data show driver took her hands off wheel before Utah crash

#artificialintelligence

Police said the driver who crashed her Tesla into the back of a stopped fire truck in Utah last week had her hands off the steering wheel at the time, confirming the woman's claim that vehicle's Autopilot feature was engaged. The 28-year-old had her hands off the wheel for 80 seconds up until the May 11 crash in South Jordan, Utah, police said Wednesday, citing Tesla's official crash report. Data recovered from the woman's Tesla Model S showed more than a dozen instances where she had taken her hands off of the steering wheel during the drive cycle before the crash, according to the South Jordan Police Department. "On two such occasions, she had her hands off the wheel for more than one minute each time and her hands came back on only after a visual alert was provided," the report said. "Each time she put her hands back on the wheel, she took them back off the wheel after a few seconds."

Tesla driver says car was in autopilot when it crashed at 60mph

The Guardian

The driver of a Tesla car that failed to stop at a red light and collided with a firetruck told investigators that the vehicle was operating on "autopilot" mode when it crashed, police said. A Tesla Model S was traveling at 60mph when it collided with the emergency vehicle in South Jordan, Utah, on Friday, causing minor injuries to both drivers, officials said Monday. The Tesla driver's claim that the car was using the autopilot technology has raised fresh questions about the electric car company's semi-autonomous system, which is supposed to assist drivers in navigating the road. The exact cause of the crash, which left the driver with a broken ankle, remains unknown, with Tesla saying it did not yet have the car's data and could not comment on whether autopilot was engaged. South Jordan police also said the 28-year-old driver "admitted that she was looking at her phone prior to the collision" and that witnesses said the car did not brake or take any action to avoid the crash.
